Over 50 and received your bowel screening test kit but its sitting in the bathroom collecting dust…?

I get it. My other half has it sitting there… having received well over 6 months ago and no amount of nagging on my behalf is working.

And it comes down to 2 reasons:

  • Its gross
  • Its embarrassing
  • But NECESSARY!!!

With bowel Cancer Awareness month throughout the entire month of June my nagging has lessened, although having the Bowel Cancer Awareness website open on our computer is providing the kind of technological hint that I can’t!

And because sometimes numbers speak louder than any words can here are some *statistics:

Estimated number of new cases of colorectal cancer diagnosed in 2017

16,682 =  9,127 males +  7,555 females

Estimated % of all new cancer cases diagnosed in 2017 12.4%

Chance of surviving at least 5 years (2009–2013) 69%

People living with colorectal cancer at the end of 2012 (diagnosed in the 5 year period 2008 to 2012) 52,630

Diagnosing Bowel Cancer through awareness and early detection is vital. I try to tell my other half this all the time.

A friend of ours in her early 30’s was diagnosed early and is today back running triathlons and doing all those crazy things that she did before she was diagnosed. Bowel Cancer has numerous symptoms and sometimes few. Knowing and understanding what they are, talking with your GP and even chatting with friends and family can be helpful in removing some of the ‘gross’ feeling around this all too common condition.
